Denise Leto is a poet who explores different forms of media and performance in her work. She was recently awarded the Orlando Prize in Poetry from the A Room of Her Own Foundation and a Fellowship in Poetry by Middlebury University’s Breadloaf in Sicily Residency Program. She was an Honorary Fellow, Artist in Residence, and juror at the Djerassi Resident Artists Program. Denise wrote the book of poems for the collaborative and multigenre performance piece with the choreographer Cid Pearlman and the cellist/composer Joan Jeanrenaud entitled, Your Body is Not a Shark. Her chapbook with Amber DiPietra, Waveform, was published by Kenning Editions. Denise’s work has appeared in a number of journals and anthologies such as The Force of What’s Possible: Writer’s on Accessibility and the Avant-Garde, Nightboat Books, The Los Angeles Review, and The Wolf Magazine (Arts Council of England). Denise has been a visiting artist, panel curator, presenter, and guest lecturer at many venues and universities including the California College of the Arts, the University of Iowa, the University of Michigan, Subterreanean Art House, and Naropa University.
Other multimedia work includes “The Vocabulary of Foxes,” a collaborative poetry and multimedia performance at Marin Headlands Center for the Arts; the video collaboration entitled A Radiant Approaching with Petra Kuppers at the University of Michigan Duderstadt Studio which premiered at “Picture this Film Festival” at Calgary SCOPE Society, Canada; Sacrarium: A Sound Poem in Six Parts as part of a dance poetry project at the Ellen Webb Studio of Arts; and Postcard Divinations, Embodied Loss, and the Poetics of Origin: A Grief Geography at the University of Arizona.
