Sarah Day has been studying the expressive potential of the body since 1996. She has loved dancing and touring with Cid Pearlman Performance Projects in CA (Santa Cruz, SF, Diavolo Dance Space- LA, MOCA- San Diego) and NY (Joyce SOHO), and has performed in Berlin with choreographer Felix Ruckert ("The United Kingdom"). Her hunger for interdisciplinary creative excavating has led to collaborations with painters, photographers, composers, musicians and others of the beauty-seeking ilk.
Sarah has been co-director of Shah and Blah Productions since 2004, creating both collaborative and solo works that explore the delicate tenacity of our humanness. Her cross-disciplinary performance has been widely presented, including such venues as SEEDS (Somatic Experiments in Earth, Dance & Science) Festival (MA), the San Francisco International Arts Festival in Union Square, Cowell Theatre and CounterPULSE (SF), the 2005 & 2006 SOWAT Contemporary Performance Festivals, and site-specific venues including the Felix Kulpa Gallery and the Tannery Arts Center (Santa Cruz). Her work has been supported by Theatre Bay Area CA$H Grants, the Cultural Council of Santa Cruz Co., and Artist Residencies from the SC Institute of Contemporary Art and The 418 Project.
Since 2005 Sarah has trained extensively with Frey Faust in the US and Europe, studying the Axis Syllabus- Universal Motor Principles. She has also studied with many other renowned teachers including Sara Shelton Mann, Jess Curtis, Shinichi Iova-Koga (butoh), and Scott Wells. In addition, her background in performance study includes contemporary & modern dance techniques, Contact Improvisation (CI), choreography/ composition, and solo voice work. Sarah teaches CI and technique classes rooted in the Axis Syllabus.
She is a mixed media visual artist and word-smith (writer), both of which greatly influence her work as a performer, inspiring detailed aesthetic and an ever-present nod to the imaginal.
